Pre-attack checklist:
Your army should be as follows:
TH5-6: Giants and Wizards
TH7: Dragons
TH8-10: Review guides to war attacks
Do not donate during wars if you have low level troops unless the person specifically asks for "anything" or "non-war" or something along those lines.
If someone asks for something specific, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING ELSE. Donating is great, we love it, but if you don't read the donation request before donating, you may do more harm than good. If you don't understand the request, don't donate, or ask them to clarify. We have developed some strange lingo, and occasionally just ask for things using very strange wording, because we are weird.
We will establish targets at the beginning of the war, it is usually something along the lines of "-1" or "-2" or "straight across". As the war progresses, leaders will often assign specific targets based on your level and what targets are available.
You may very well lose money on a war. Don't go cheap. Never use goblins. Low-level balloons are generally not effective. Barbs have almost no use in wars. Archers are useful for certain attack types, but only in limited quantities.
Clear the enemy clan castle before you start deploying your troops. See CC clearing tactics.
You generally want to attack from one or two sides only, the circle the base strat only serves to give their defenses maximum opportunity to kill your troops.
Spells that work for dragons: all rage, or 1 heal and rest rage, or 3 lightning (used on the hardest to reach Air Defense).
Spells that work for Hogs: All heals
Defense:
Your clan castle and town hall should be near the middle of the base.
Do not use double walls ever.
Air Defense is one of the most important buildings in your town, especially up to TH7. Make sure the enemy can't take it out easily or quickly.
Ask one of the veteran clan members to evaluate your base from time to time.

- Clan castle is full and has war appropriate troops. If you don't know what to request, ask, someone will help you.
- Barbarian King and Archer Queen are rested. (if applicable)
- Spell factory is full.
- Army camps are full.
- Watch any war attack replays on the base you are going to attack, if you know what the enemy has in their Clan Castle and where their traps and bombs are, you will have a significant advantage.
- Last but not least, read facebook chat, and in-game chat for target assignments, especially if it is your second attack.
