Here's some general guidelines for donations.
1) Do not donate Wall Breakers or Goblins unless requested.
2) Giants are not ideal for defense, but are great if they are farming.
3) Archers are a good all-around donation because they can attack behind walls and hit ground and air units.
4) Request as often as you like, but try to keep you troops received equal with the troops donated.
5) If you want something specific, ask for it.
6) If someone asks for something specific, please honor that request.
